superset design created a special gift by exploring the formal and symbolic similarities between traditional korean patterns and QR codes.

this project began with the formal similarity between traditional korean patterns and QR codes. what makes this project truly interesting is not just the visual resemblance, but the fact that both symbols are visual systems that carry meaning.

to bring this gift to life, we journeyed to a quiet corner of seokmodo in ganghwado where a master artisan works, in a timeworn studio tucked deep within the stillness.

we didn’t want the final look and use of the sleeve to feel traditional, even though it was crafted using a traditional technique. our hope was that the message embedded in the gift would be discovered gradually through continued use.
that’s why we committed to a high level of craftsmanship in its making.

through this project, we explored the intersection where traditional craft meets digital systems. a design language in which material and technology, symbolism and information, emotion and logic coexist with equal weight. within that, the 'symbol' is not a mere ornament, but a code that connects one era to another.

a norigae, handcrafted by a traditional knot (maedeup) artisan, was attached to the front of the sleeve, seamlessly combining two forms of korean traditional craftsmanship.
